Years and an Ocean - Blog Tour and Review

Years and an Ocean

? Years and an Ocean by Jo Noelle Going to a séance was supposed to be a harmless diversion in Victorian England, but for Delia Spencer, it was life altering. Since that day, she has been plagued by fainting spells, while her consciousness visits Elle Thomas more than a century in the future. In modern-day New York, Elle has kept secret the dream-like memories of Delia’s life. As the visits have become more frequent, Elle is confused about what is her life and what is not. Back in England, Delia’s father is determined to marry her off to any marginally suitable man before her illness becomes known to society. But will Delia consent, now that she’s had a taste of Elle’s independence?

Praise for Years and an Ocean I enjoyed this fresh take on characters that connect over differing time periods. The characters were rich and interesting, and I loved the historical aspect with the modern. Clean romance is a bonus. The light fantasy elements bordered on paranormal, but never got out of the realm of plausibility. Good writing and a story I can recommend. ~Renae Mackley This book was not at all predictable, which I love! Just when I thought I had the ending figured out, Jo Noelle took me for a ride. ~Stacy Carroll   Jo NoelleAuthor Jo Noelle Jo Noelle grew up in Colorado and Utah but also spent time in Idaho and California. Experiencing a new self-worth, Sarah Ann shares her ideas and wisdom with her family and community while never disclosing her secret.

REVIEW
Life is interesting.  As a mother, and now a grandmother, I look back over my adult life and see it as a series of vignettes.  My memories of things that have happened from my courtship, to our children’s early years and the myriad of stories of family growing pains come back in little spurts.  All these stories seem to be punctuated in time capsules, with date stamps of “in the summer of”, or “the year John turned”.  Rae Carvel’s By the River was written much in this vein, a progressive reflection of a pioneer woman’s memories during the latter 1800’s.
Through her eyes, the reader was able to witness the early strains of the suffrage movement in Oregon and the struggles of women as they worked to strained to get basic rights.  We also watched the struggles within the traditional marriage as she earned for more say in finances and in decisions concerning their plans for their children’s futures.  So much of what we take for granted is due to the “battles” our grandmothers and great grandmothers waged a hundred years ago.  By the River did a beautiful job of presenting the story of the life of a pioneer woman, her trials, her victories, and her love of family.  There is much be learned from reading this book about women of the west.
I would give this book a 3.5 star rating.

GUEST BLOG

A Tribute
 by
Brandy Jellum

Authors are constantly asked “When is your next book coming out?” or “What are you working on next?”. As an author, I love being asked these questions, I love interacting with readers, and love knowing that they’re just as exciting as I am. However, for my next release, I’ve kept pretty quiet until I knew I couldn’t anymore. The reason for this was a simple one: the story holds a lot of emotion for me. And towards the end of March, I finally decided to let everyone know just what I was working on, and gave a little explanation as to why.
The story is a tribute. The greatest way I knew how to thank someone who impacted my life in a way I didn’t realize until it was too late. It was a story I wrote for my best friend, one I lost in August 2014. The loss was a terrible feeling, I had no idea how to get through it, so I turned to the one thing I knew how to do- I started to write. Before I knew it, the weight bearing down on my chest, crushing my lungs, was beginning to finally lift. With each word, I felt a little lighter. I was starting to breathe again, to function again, to look at pictures without crying, to see a yellow truck without the dam bursting, and to say her name without my heart feeling like it’s shattering in a million pieces. I never knew a pain like that until I lost my best friend, and I may never fully recover. But I do know that with this story, a little piece of her, the legacy she left behind, had been immortalized by the power of words.
That’s the thing I love most about writing: having the power to do anything I want. It’s healing, heartbreaking, loving, and all around the best way to say things that might’ve never been said. And while the story I wrote I honor of my best friend is purely fictional, each of the characters carry a little piece of her within them. Whether it’s the way they respond to a situation, their personality, the color of their hair or eyes, each of them is her. The most beautiful person I have ever come across in my life. And while it still hurts, I’m thankful for the thirteen years we shared together. I’m honored to be able to take this loss and to turn it in to something beautiful. All that was left was to give the story the perfect title, which was perhaps the easiest part of creating the story, and that is….This One’s For You. Because really, the story is for her, and every single person who was lucky enough to meet her, even if it was only once.

THIS ONE’S FOR YOU
Coming May 2014

No boys, no dating, and definitely no falling in love—those were the rules for college, and Brennan carved them into the brick walls guarding her heart…
But there’s a fire burning behind those walls, and when Brennan meets Owen Scott, the (mysterious) new guy across the hall, she can’t deny the pull between them. He is everything she should never want. Everyone warns her to stay away—even Owen himself—but the heart wants what the heart wants, even if it knows that it’s going to get hurt—even if it means throwing old promises to new flames…

Duet for Two Hands - SHOWCASE

Title: Duet for Three Hands
Author: Tess Thompson
Publication Date: February 13, 2015
Publisher: Booktrope

A story of forbidden love, lost dreams, and family turmoil. The first book in a new historical series from bestselling author Tess Thompson, Duet for Three Hands is equal parts epic love story, sweeping family saga, and portrait of days gone by. Set against the backdrop of the American South between 1928 and 1934, four voices blend to tell a tale of prejudice, fear, and love. The Bellmonts are the epitome of the rich and elite in Atlanta society, but behind the picture-perfect façade are hidden moments of violence and betrayal. After marrying into the Bellmont family, Nathaniel, a former concert pianist who is nearly ruined by his wife’s unrelenting ambition and unstable mind, finds hope in the promise of his most recent protégé. His brother-in-law, artistic Whitmore Bellmont, and the maid’s daughter, Jeselle, have a secret relationship despite their drastically different circumstances and shades of skin. Unfortunately, most of the world disagrees with their color blindness.

Review:
As a musician, it is always a delight to be able to pick up a novel that centers on the world of music and delves into the mind of a musician. When I first picked up Duet for Three Hands, I knew within a very few pages that this novel would make my “Best of 2015 Reads” list.  I found this compelling novel reminiscent of The Swan House by Elizabeth Musser or of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, both which dealt with racial inequality in the south, but each which maintained a warmth and vividness of characters.  Tess Thompson’s writing style and quality of narrative demand be considered alongside other writers of the aforementioned stature.
Having once lived deeply immersed in a world of music and art, I well know and understand the deep pathos of emotions that the artistic soul feels and expresses through their performance.  These same emotions so many times are pronounced in the everyday activities of their lives, and quite often they have trouble connecting with the world outside their sphere.  This becomes evident in the characters of the novel, and Tess is masterful in her portrayal of the soul of the artists that reside between the covers of her book.
The character and soul of the main male protagonists, Nathaniel, in Duet for Three Hands, was best described by a quote from Henry David Thoreau when he said, “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.”  Truly, Nathaniel was a man whose entire life was immersed in his music. He lived and breathed the very music he played, and it all suddenly was swept away in a tragic accident.  His long awaited love that he desperately wanted, he watched wither and die before his very eyes.
Tess Thompson understood the need for complex characters and plot lines that keep the reader captivated and engaged.  Her Ability to paint a tableau with her pen and to underscore the storyline with a symphony of emotion brought a collision of literature and the world of music and art to the printed word.  Duet for Three Hands gives the non-musical the gift of experiencing the soul of music and the non-artistic the gift of experiencing the beauty of art from the eye of the artist.
Folded into the stories of love and passion, is also a social message about the glaring disparity of equality of many issues that plagued our society during the late 20’s and early 30’s in the Deep South.  While ensnaring you in a story of love, hate, and despair, the dramatic storyline and plot will keep you reaching for the next page in hope for a better tomorrow.
I recommend 5 STARS for this novel, and a hats off for a fabulous job.

Come Winter

By
Clare Gutierrez

SYNOPSIS
A lowly maidservant. A disguised fugitive. A savior to the poor and endangered. A queen.

Such is the paradox of Lady Caterina Tabor, an extraordinary young girl who, en route to England, finds herself captured and at the mercy of a stern and powerful lord. Forced to work as a common kitchen maid in the dank halls of Dermoth Castle, Caty dreams of her past as a free and autonomous maiden with a bright future in the English courts—did fate have other plans?

This early trial is but the first in a litany of shocking tribulations; imprisoned, abused, accused of sorcery, and kidnapped, Caty’s life is for so long anything but charmed—but you can’t keep a soaring heart shackled. As we follow this misunderstood maiden's journey through both the unexpected, electrifying joys of new love and the pain of mind-boggling adversity, we become eyewitnesses to the astonishing way she not only transforms herself but enchants, inspires, and invigorates those around her.

Spanning decades of castle life, treacherous journeys, bloody battles, and heartache, Come Winter is a sweeping yet personal tale of a brave woman who at once embodies and transcends the prescribed and oftentimes oppressive roles her society demanded. Let Clare Gutierrez (author of Dancing with the Boss) curate your voyage back to the Scottish highlands of ages past—a time and place in which simply staying alive constituted a noble adventure, and becoming a patron of the oppressed and the impoverished could make you a hallowed queen.

REVIEW
Ever so often, and not nearly as often as my longing heart would desire, I stumble across a true diamond amongst the many crystals and gemstones that make their way to my desk.  When I read the synopsis for Come Winter, it sounded intriguing.
Once I opened the book and began to fall into the spell of the first lines of the story, I realized that this was going to be something more than just another historical novel.  Within pages I knew I had found a master of the written word.  The words seemed to have slid off her pen and onto the written page with a magic all their own.  They wove their own tapestry and came off the page in such imagery that my mind’s eye was a rolling screen throughout the story.
Clare demonstrated a great appreciation for the plight of noble women during the early mid ages when they were but chattel of their lords and kings, to be traded and passed on as part and parcel of the holdings.  Though this subject has been demonstrated in many a novel, I have never seen it set as the central theme, nor presented so passionately through the eyes of a woman of noble birth as it was in Come Winter.
Katy, the heroine of the book, was a woman of strength, a lady of great passion and one who had the capability to love deeply.  She was a unique lady of her time, having received a well rounded education, speaking several languages, reading and writing in the same, a healer, and a leader.  But because she was a woman, she was but an item to be owned, to be traded and bartered by parent, captor, until she finally obtained the highest position that a woman could obtain, Queen.  Even when she reach this vaulted position, she found she was still but a possession, a captive, and at the pleasure of her lord and master, the king.  She would never be free.
Clare took the time to develop her characters to give them the breath of life and to allow the reader to see what it was to live, through their eyes. We learned to feel their pain and despair as well as their joys and ecstacies.  The POV was not limited to that of Katy, but also that of the men who were a part of her adult life through the years.  It added an additional dimension to the characters, giving them well rounded perspectives and allowing the narrative to provide a complete picture of the story as it moved ever forward through the years, first from France to Scotland, then to Spain and finally to Italy.
After finishing Come Winter, out of curiosity, I looked up to see how many books Clare Gutierrez has written and only found one addition book published in 2012.  I believe Clare has the talent to become a writing force to contend with.  Her ability to write a believable historical novel, not so much one that was based on factual events, but one that nailed it, on living conditions of the time.  Her style is much that of Michelle Moran, or Phillipa Gregory.  It is rich in imagery and full bodied prose that throws the reader into the Age of the setting without actually forcing them to try to deal with terms and language they do not know or understand.  Most of all she leaves you wanting more.  You cannot ask for better than that.  This is a must read book for any historical, romance, adult fiction, woman’s fiction fan.  FIVE STARS

AN INTERVIEW
Why did your choose this story to write?
The story unfolded on its own. I had the beginning in my head but needed a time and place were such a thing could take place. A little research, such as the wifenapping, and I was off running.  While doing research to find a way to use the scenes I had in my head, I kept returning to the very great difficulty women have faced in every 'age' in history. The research gave me LOTS of ingredients for a story. The way I write is, I suppose, a little strange. As I begin to put into words the story in my mind, the characters take on a life of their own. Caty developed in just such a way. As she moved through her life, the world around her changed.

Do you have a love affair with history?
I do love historical movies, books, architecture etc.
I noticed that you live on a wonderful preserve and ranch in Texas.  Can you tell us a little about it?
My husband is from the Valley, as this part of Texas is affectionately called. When his dad became ill, he requested Beto come home. We did. The preserve/ranch we have is not where we actually live. It's a long distance from where his office was located..about 50 miles. He bought the ranch with the idea in mind to create a place were people could go to photograph wildlife without the land around changing. A place where the wildlife could live without man's intrusion. We could not have imagined how much people would enjoy our ranch.

What was the title of your first book?  Synopsis in one paragraph?
My first book is titled Dancing with the Boss.  In the American Southwest, criminal organizations from all over the world conspire to control everything from human trafficking to drug running and gun smuggling. Caught in the midst of all this is the smart and sassy Annie, the owner of a rare-art dealership in Arizona. In a chance encounter, Annie meets Tony, a veritable gangster and mafioso who finds the brutal nature of his work at odds with his growing feelings for Annie. But when Annie learns that her brother Allen, a former special ops agent for the FBI, has gotten himself into some deep trouble, she finds an unexpected ally in Tony.

Do you already have another book floating in your head? or on paper yet?
Whenever I am at a corner in my writing, and can't decide how to get around it, I work on something else. Consequently, I have several other projects on my MacBook Pro.

Does storytelling run in your family?
Storytelling was not in my family that I know of, however, my mother made certain we all had tons of reading material, although we were on a ranch miles from any library. Granted, I read, reread and reread again the books, but they were always there. After my mother died, I found a notebook with short, two verse poems. Just as she was, they are gentle.

Where have I found help?
I subscribe to several periodicals for writers. Although certainly not everything is useful, they do provide a great deal of information, both in the arena of doing the work itself and the arena of trying to get as clean a copy as possible before submission. Oh, and I'm sure everyone already knows this, but Google is a GREAT source for research.

 How important is research?
As important as the story itself.

Don't give up. Keep typing, writing (I write on planes, in motels, etc) and talking. It does come together.
